Seminar on Occasion of World Mental Health Day (WMHD) on 10.10.2014

World Mental Health Day was celebrated by the Department of Psychiatry, IIMSAR & BCRH, on 10th of October, 2014. The theme of this year’s WMHD was ‘Living with Schizophrenia!’ Various posters were displayed on schizophrenia, care-giver role and need for early diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses.
The audience for the seminar included about 50 individuals drawn from the faculty members of various departments, nursing staff and students, patients and their family members.
Dr. Neelanjana Paul, Assistant Professor, department of Psychiatry, initiated the seminar, by describing ‘What is Schizophrenia’in a very simple manner so make topic understandable for the audience. Prof. (Dr.) Krishna Basu, Head of the department (HOD) of Medicine, spoke about her professional and personal experiences while dealing with persons with mental illnesses. Prof. (Dr.) Sushma Banerjee, HOD, Surgery, spoke about her interest in the speciality, and yet how she found it daunting to deal with such chronic disorders. Prof. (Dr.) Sankar Pal, HOD Eye, gave an account of individuals with unusual visual complaints, who were later found to have psychiatric comorbidities. Finally, Dr. Sourav Khanra, Senior Resident, department of Psychiatry, spoke of the current developments in treatment of schizophrenia, and how prognosis of mental illnesses may overall improve, with better awareness of health professionals and family members.
